IF you'd love to teach the next generation vital water survival skills, the Rural City of Wangaratta wants to hear from you.

Council plans to sponsor 10 locals to complete a Swim and Survive water safety course, which will give them the qualifications to become swimming instructors.

Wangaratta sports and events precinct manager Chloe Davies said the idea to offer the free scholarships came about due to a shortage of swimming instructors.

"Our industry has gone through some major challenges over the past year," she said.

"There is a huge demand for swimming lessons, but not enough qualified teachers to deliver the courses.

"This is something that’s not unique to Wangaratta, but we think our potential solution is something different."

Ms Davies said being a swimming instructor was an extremely rewarding and flexible career.

"This is a perfect opportunity for someone who might be semi-retired or returning to the workforce," she said.

"You don’t have to be an amazing lap swimmer to teach children how to swim.

"What’s most important is to have that passion for teaching children to be safe around water – skills every child should have."

Swim and Survive is an accredited course run by Life Saving Victoria.

Those who complete the course have no obligation to work for council, and will also not be guaranteed a job.

The course will be held on Sunday, March 14 at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Expressions of interest for the scholarships must be lodged by March 7, and can be emailed to wsac@wangaratta.vic.gov.au.
